There are a variety of nice places to go for food in Kharkov. Paris (http://paris.kharkov.ua) is high-end restaurant, offering great food plus the option of watching films and plays. Hoorah! They even occasionally show French comedies! Pushka (31, Pushkinskaya str., pushka.kharkov.ua) is a high-class restaurant, decorated in the style of a medieval castle. There is a cosy courtyard at the back. Considered expensive by the locals, a meal costs $50-65 without drinks.

In the mid-price range, $25-50 there are a number of interesting options. The Fashion Restaurant (16, Universitetskaya str.) has great views from the top of the hill, the atmosphere being both warm and friendly, and while sitting there you will feel far away from the noisy city. Dikanka (7 Lermontovskaya) is based on a pastoral picture from Gogol's famous stories about Ukrainian country life. There is wooden furniture surrounded by sunflowers and traditionally-made carpets. Here, you'll have a chance to taste Ukrainian cuisine, such as vareniki with different stuffings of bacon, herring and caviar. Gostinnaya restaurant (44/2, Sumskaya str.) also has a terrific location. The view of the square and Shevchenko monument is marvellous. Stargorod (7 Lermontovskaya str., www.stargorod.net) where they serve a really unique beer which is brewed on the premises. How can you resist it? The Britannia restaurant will make you feel at home if you're from the U.K. The surroundings are pleasant and comforting as the place is located in a pine forest not far from the lake in Guravlevskiy park.

Puzata hata (2, Sumskaya str), near the railway station is part of a well-known chain of Ukrainian fast food cafes. This place is very popular with teenagers and students. It's normally very crowded and it's no wonder because the food is tasty and cheap - 40-60 gr. or $5-8 (USD).

There are a couple of places where people simply like to go and hang out. The Karavan shopping mall is near the Geroev truda station. It has shops, cafes and bars as well as a skating-rink, billiard hall and cinema. But don't forget the Guravlevskiy park where, in the Summer locals like to swim and sunbathe near the lake.

There are a range of great theatres in Kharkov, catering for different tastes. You will find theatres showing Russian classics, such as the works of Pushkin, traditional Ukrainian theatre, ballet and opera as well as modern theatre.
